PSB Boisjoli General Activities

Over the course of this internship, we had the opportunity to participate in a wide range of activities. At “15-minute Thursdays,” we got to meet the entire auditing team. “Department Talks” provided the chance to discover even more about what each partner’s job in the various departments entailed, as well as giving us a better idea of what our work might look like within a few years. At “Morning Coffee with a Partner,” I enjoyed a real conversation with a partner, where we discussed both personal and professional matters. Thanks to this activity, I was able to gain information on my academic path and career prospects with PSB Boisjoli. In a single, one-hour exchange, I learned so much. On Fridays, interns participated in virtual group activities. These activities allowed us to form friendships with our fellow interns. We had some good laughs and a bunch of great times. One of the activities included an “e-Mazing Race,” a virtual version of the “Amazing Race,” created using Google maps. I loved this activity since I have a passion for travelling and discovering new cultures.

Favourite Activity

The virtual “4 à 5” cocktail hour at the beginning of the summer was my favourite. I had the chance to meet partners from every department. It was really fun, and I loved the positive atmosphere. All the partners introduced themselves, so we had the opportunity to get to know them at both a professional and personal level!

Tips and Advice for Getting Hired

My summer internship with PSB Boisjoli gave me the opportunity to perfect some of my knowledge and skills when it comes to the employment process The employment process can be incredibly stressful and intimidating for students. The best way to get hired for an internship is to come well prepared before you meet the people in charge. Here are three tips that I think were important in landing my internship with PSB Boisjoli:

  1. Do your research. Visit the company website and all its social media pages. In addition to presenting their services, here the firm will introduce their employees, the organizations they support, and the core values that are most important to them. This research entails an important step you need to take before you speak to the company leaders.
  2. Make yourself stand out during your conversation with the company leaders. What people say during the recruitment process is often repetitive. When you mention something you read or ask a question about it, you are broadening the conversation and setting yourself apart, while also showing that you came prepared.
  3. Wear an appropriate outfit – To make a good impression, make sure you choose clothing that looks professional, even if your meeting is online. This means you should avoid jeans and t. shirts. Put on your best suit or favourite dress. If you are not sure what to wear or need more inspiration, do a Google search with keywords like, “Professional attire interview.”

And there you go, now you’re ready to get hired!

Favourite Activity

My favourite activity was the summer intern projects. We had the opportunity to plan an activity from start to finish, with the help of Julie (Marketing department) and Nathalie (HR department). What I loved the most about this project is we had the chance to be creative as we took on the challenge of finding something that included the remote staff during this extra special year. I think that as interns, this also helped us to bond and get to know each other better, even if we were distanced. It was a bit like a teambuilding activity, but over the long term. I am very proud of the idea we chose!

Welcome and Training Week

At our first day, we enjoyed such a lovely welcome. We participated in an introductory activity and a virtual lunch with our buddy, complete with a complimentary meal. Over the course of a full week of training, we prepared for our rotation by learning about the different tools and software the firm uses. Experienced professionals trained and guided us from the beginning and remained available throughout our entire internship. It was very educational, and we learned so much. All the employees were so welcoming and ready to answer our questions at any time. Despite the pandemic, we attended a virtual “4 à 5” cocktail hour to mark the beginning of our internship, bringing together the interns, recruitment committee and our buddies. PSB Boisjoli offered us each a cocktail set, delivered in a case. It was both unexpected and truly kind. I really appreciated these extra creative touches. We also had a meeting that matched a firm partner with old summer students, which was great for helping us to better understand our roles and responsibilities.

My Favourite Activity

I loved the many team building activities we participated in on Fridays throughout the summer. We played games as a team or individually via the software Teams. It was really fun! The most memorable activity was the “e-Mazing Race.” We were divided into two teams (chosen randomly) and had to answer questions about popular and famous places around the world like the Rome Coliseum and Great Wall of China. The goal was to accumulate as many points as possible in the least amount of time.

Firm Culture

At the beginning of the internship, I really liked the online integration, but I wanted the experience of working directly in the office. As soon as I arrived, I was welcomed into a safe and pleasant environment. Right away, I could see that the firm had taken measures for COVID-19; the offices respected social distancing guidelines; hand sanitizer was available to everyone, and we all had the option to telecommute. Anybody I passed who I had not yet met took the time to introduce themselves, which created a personal and familial touch. From new arrivals to partners, everyone adhered to an “open door policy” which is conducive to learning new skills and helping you feel valued. PSB Boisjoli is free from any sort of hierarchical barriers, making it the ideal place to learn and thrive. I was pleasantly surprised to see how much my work colleagues were ready to help and encourage my learning. Even in the midst of a pandemic, I was able to enjoy PSB Boisjoli’s culture and environment. Centered around enthusiasm and talent, this workplace is a tribute to the firm’s strong culture.

Favourite Activity

During the third week of my internship, I had the wonderful opportunity of shadowing and observing Steven Moses, a tax partner who has been part of the firm since the mid 1980’s. I gained a better understanding of a partner’s responsibilities, how a tax department runs, as well as how busy Steven is! In just one day, I learned how to manage clients and workloads, in addition to a variety of different tax related concepts. I will always be grateful for this opportunity which is a testament to the strength of the PSB Boisjoli mentorship program.

Virtual Program

The ability to telecommute throughout this internship made for an extraordinary experience. We participated in virtual meetings and distanced training through shared screens, our main learning tools. While these tools sometimes presented a few challenges, they still helped to advance our education. Every two weeks, we were immersed in a new department and a team member welcomed us and matched us with a resource person who oversaw assigning our tasks and answering our questions. I had the opportunity to collaborate and interact with a number of people from different departments, allowing me to expand my vision and understanding of accounting. Furthermore, former interns met with their work colleagues and participated in in-person activities to get to know each other and form connections. This year’s summer internship did require the HR department to find new ways to make sure that interns felt comfortable and like they belonged to the firm. On Fridays, we took part in virtual team-building activities where we alternated between individual and group pursuits. One example was the “e-Mazing race” (the Amazing Race online) where interns were divided into two teams and needed to answer questions about the history and geography of various countries. This activity entailed both a time limit and an elaborate scoring system. To finish the race, teamwork and communication were key. These activities gave us the chance to get to know each other and form connections.

Favourite Activity

“15-minute Thursdays” was one of the many activities I looked forward to all week. For me, it was the opportunity to meet new people and ask them for advice. These people understood my path and what lay ahead academically and professionally, thereby helping me to prepare. Firm members were also always kind and accessible, which made these meetings very enjoyable.

Rotations Program

Our summer internship with PSB Boisjoli was led and run through the rotations program, a super original and interesting system that taught us more about the company and how it works. We often picture an accounting firm as just an auditing department when in fact, there are so many more services and career possibilities. PSB Boisjoli gave us this unique and highly enriching opportunity to discover the different practices within the framework of two-week rotations. Through this rotation system, we were able to learn more about the different services the firm offers and the opportunities that exist for accounting students. I learned a great deal about the role of business valuator, a relatively unknown training that seems quite interesting. My favourite was the Canadian tax department. At the beginning of each rotation, we had the chance to meet the heads of each department. After they briefly introduced their department, we had the opportunity to ask all the questions we wanted. This introduction made it possible for us to meet a number of employees, virtually, of course. No matter the department, I always felt very welcomed, seen and heard. Everyone took the time to listen to all my questions and thoroughly explain all my tasks.

Favourite Activity

My favourite activity was definitely, “Morning Coffee with a Partner.” The concept was quite simple. Each intern was paired with a partner and we had an hour to talk and ask all the questions we wanted. I had the opportunity to speak with Ariel Sabbah, one of the audit department partners. I got to learn all about her career path, as well as the reality of being a partner with the firm and the responsibilities that come with it. This discussion was deeply enriching.

I very much enjoyed my two-month internship at PSB Boisjoli. I was given access to all the resources I needed in order to complete the work assigned to me, while learning on the go. I was well supported by the staff in the various departments I was assigned to. They always took time to thoroughly explain my assignments to me and answer any questions I had. I became friends with a lot of my co-workers at the firm while playing for the PSB Boisjoli hockey team, as well as attending fun extracurricular activities organized by the firm. Overall, I very much enjoyed my experience and would highly recommend considering PSB Boisjoli to any aspiring CPA in their application process.
